Pregnancy Nutrition: Probiotics during Pregnancy

18/08/2017

Nutrition for mummies and babies during pregnancy is of utmost importance for our parents and we were glad to be working with our partners Pharmazen and LBB2 to share about the importance of probiotics on 15 July 2017 with more than 300 expecting parents!

So exactly what is probiotics and how does that help our expecting parents?

In our body, we are a host to various microorganisms especially in our gut. Probiotics help modulate and regulate our immune system to better our defences against bad bacteria, viruses etc.

A stronger gut means lesser occurrences of diarrhoea, constipation, heartburn, acid reflux, bloating and more digestive related issues – common problems our mummies face during pregnancy.

How to choose the right probiotic for mummies?

With so many probiotic supplements on the market today, it can be a challenge to choose the right probiotic. Here are some tips of what to look for when picking a probiotic supplement that is right for you.

1. Colony Forming Units (CFUs)

Probiotics are measured in CFUs (Colony Forming Units). Potencies higher than 3 billion are recommended for reasons that affect everyone which include: Age – As we age our natural flora tends to lose probiotics at a faster rate, especially Bifidobacteria, commonly found in the large intestine. Travel and Stress – More than 70% of our immune cells reside in the gut. It is a great benefit to use probiotic supplements during times that are more likely to compromise our immunity. Diet – Sometimes it may be difficult to eat as well as you hope. Processed foods, artificial flavorings, and other common items in the diet play a large role in depleting our natural flora.

2. Viability

Probiotics must be alive when you consume them. There are only a handful of strains on the market that have been proven viable when packaged and when introduced to your body’s acid & bile. Probiotic bacteria are living organisms and they will not survive well at room temperature. When you see probiotics with upwards of 5 strains, keep in mind that only a small portion of those strains will actually reach your gut and be beneficial to your health.

3. Strains

One of the main differences between different probiotic supplements is the type of bacteria they contain, also known as the strain. When buying a probiotic supplement, choose a product which contains well-documented strains – that is, those that have been the subject of research in controlled clinical trials, as these trials provide the most accurate and up-to-date knowledge on the matter.

Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG (LGG)

A bacterium that occurs naturally in the human digestive tract and ever since it was discovered, it is one of the most studied for its health benefits with more than 800 scientific studies. Able to survive the digestive tract, LGG is commonly found in a sachet formed and dispense as a supplement. Parents can get them at our local pharmacies and have it as a prescription!

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. Lactis (BB-12)

This is one of the world’s most documented friendly bacteria. It has been used as a food ingredient and health supplement worldwide since 1985 without reported side effects. Tested in several clinical studies involving newborn pre-term infants to elderly, there were no side effects reported from its introduction to the subjects’ immune systems.

Mummies trust probiotics to help them in their digestive gut’s health. Parents who are looking for a potential solution should then check out LBB2 and see if it would be suitable!
