Hands Are Not For Hitting

Hands Are Not For Hitting

AUTHOR: Martine Agassi Ph.D

AGE RANGE: 4-7 years

SUITABLE FOR: Prechool and up

MAIN FOCUS: Growing Up & Facts of Life

It’s never too soon for children to learn that violence is never okay, hands can do many good things, and everyone is capable of positive, loving actions. In this bright, inviting, durable board book, simple words and full-color illustrations teach these important concepts in ways even very young children can understand.

I was having problems with my son about his bad habit of hitting recently. At the suggestion of a friend, I ordered this book. I was pretty skeptical because time-outs and other behavior modification have not been working. With nothing to lose (except a little money), my husband and I decided to order this book and read our son some reasonable examples of things you could do with our hands; his hands. We read it every night at bed time, and we have seen a drastic improvement.

After about three nights of reading the book, the hitting stopped. My son has very limited word vocabulary, but he clearly understands what is happening as we read the story. He waves his hands and says "yes" when I ask him if he likes to draw. He plays with his hands when I ask if hands are for playing. Even if your child has not started talking, there is a good chance that they will understand this book. I highly recommend it!
