Review: Art Speaks Studio

When choosing enrichment activities, some parents prefer programmes that promise a tangible improvement in academic grades, to non-academic programmes, such as art and music, that are more about developing soft skills. This may not be such a wise move, as soft skills become increasingly vital in our rapidly changing world.

Mr Patrick Tay, co-founder of Art Speaks Studio, points out that while the benefits of engaging in the arts are usually intangible and harder to quantify, they are equally important to a child’s development. “Children who engage in art tend to have greater motor sensory skills than their peers. Their observation skills are also generally better as they are usually required to observe various objects during class. Creativity and freedom of expression are other commonly mentioned benefits.”

Conveniently located in Serangoon Gardens, Art Speaks Studio offers a range of art programmes for children and adults. For children of ages 3 to 6, the Teeter-Totter programme introduces them to basic sketching, painting and creative arts. The Binary Star programme will teach children 7 to 11 years old the fundamentals of drawing, and the use of watercolours, charcoal and chalk.

Trial classes are available for parents and children to get a taste of the programme before signing up. If you’re wondering what to do with the remaining school holidays, Art Speaks Studio has lined up a series of fun safari-themed holiday art programmes for children between 3 and 16 years old. For more information about the programmes, visit Art Speaks Studio.

So what makes Art Speaks Studio stand out from other art enrichment providers? Mr Tay shares that their curriculum, developed by art educators with more than 10 years’ of experience, is appropriate for the targeted age groups and allows students to develop at their own pace.

In addition to proficiency in art, Mr Tay says teachers at Art Speaks Studio are required to have the right attitude in cultivating students’ interest in arts and be able to interact well with students. He adds that all their teachers undergo training prior to leading a class.

According to the International Child Art Foundation, “Research indicates that a child who is exposed to the arts acquires a special ability to think creatively, be original, discover, innovate, and create intellectual property – key attributes for individual success and social prosperity in the twenty-first century.”. If you’re keen to give your child a life-long advantage, the arts could be your best bet.
