Toddler Yoga

10/03/2016

Yoga practitioners are on the rise – and they are starting as young as the age of two!

If you havent already started your kids on it, you must have at least heard of it. Toddler yoga is all the rage now among parents and children in Singapore and around the world. But what exactly is toddler yoga, and why is it so popular?

Well, first things first –

Yoga is a 5000-year-old practice which started in India. The word “yoga” means union, referring to the “union” or coming together of mind and body.

To put it simply, yoga is a system of physical exercises and postures which help one in buildingawareness, strength, flexibility and confidence. The benefits of yoga have long been attested to. They include stress relief, improved blood circulation, improved digestion, increased concentration, relaxation, a sense of well-being, inner peace, and so on.

Sounds good, if I’m a working adult who needs to de-stress. But yoga for toddlers? Really?

Yep! Why should the benefits of yoga not apply to children too?

Here are some reasons why yoga and toddlers totally go together, and these might just help you understand why so many parents thinkit’s awesome for their kids.

HELPS BODIES STAY FLEXIBLE AND GROW STRONG

Young bodies are naturally flexible and yoga helps them to maintain this flexibility, whilestrengthening their growing muscles. Strength and flexibility allow for fewer and less-severe injuries, especially when these little tikes are running and bouncing around all the time.

TEACHES FOCUS AND ATTENTIVENESS

The different poses and pacing allows children to learn self-control, teachingthem focus and awareness from a young age - a skill that is essential in learning and all of life.

INCREASE CONFIDENCE

Yoga poses yield poise and power, and help children learn persistence as well as control of their own bodies. This does wonders for a child’s confidence.

HELPS QUIET THE MIND

Yoga teaches us to be still (and we all know how rare this is to achieve in little kids)! Even if it is just for a few minutes, children learn the importance and peacefulness of being quiet and focused, and learning this mental posture is a tool that will benefit them throughout their lives.

GIVES US TOOLS TO MANAGE STRESS

Practicing yoga provides powerful relaxation techniques for calming the mind and the body. The carefree little ones may not need these techniques right now (and we do hope it remains this way for a long while!), but these are all tools that a child can carry into future life situations.

SPARKS CREATIVITY

Yoga encourages self-expression and freedom through the various postures and poses. Not only is it fun, but it invites kids to start being bold and creative in exploring the ways they can move their bodies to express themselves.

TEACHES DISCIPLINE AND RESPONSIBILITY

Yoga is a journey which takes discipline, practice, patience and perseverance. These are traits that are important to instill in children from the beginning, which they can carry along with them for the rest of their lives.

So, are you convinced about toddler yoga yet?
